Howell Station was named for Evan P. Howell, a captain in the Confederate Infantry, who gained recognition in the Battle of Atlanta. He was very active in city and county affairs, serving as Mayor of Atlanta in 1903-04. Mr. Howell died in 1905, as the neighborhood was developing. Mr. William T. Knight, a resident of the neighborhood from the mid 1920s to the early 1950s donated a four-acre tract of land to the City of Atlanta in December 1940, to be made into a park for the enjoyment of the residents, which is now known as Knight Park.

There are other great areas in this part of Atlanta and Hunter Hills, Mozely Park and Washington Park, are three great examples. They all feature quiet bungalows, two-story brick estates and wooden ranches lining wide, clean streets and are just recently being redeveloped and becoming very popular with anyone that wants to be close to downtown in a great area. Nearby, Dixie Hills is emerging as a result of a successful neighborhood redevelopment plan while Grove Park has concerned citizens that want to preserve their sense of community as the area is growing.
